The fashion of the 60s of the last century in the USSR demonstrated many amazing and interesting combinations. One of the most debatable was the habit of carrying socks for shoes.

The fashion for wearing socks with shoes in the USSR was caused by a whole complex of reasons: from the desire to follow Western trends to the need to protect your legs from discomfort. This phenomenon reflects the features of the life of the Soviet man and represents an interesting example of how social, economic and cultural factors affect the fashion.

As in many other areas of life, in the fashion of the USSR there was a strong influence of the West. Fashion trends from Europe and America reached the Soviet Union, although with a certain delay. Fashion for the combination of shoes and socks was no exception. It is believed that this trend was popularized by Coco Chanel herself, who saw in such a combination practicality and elegance.

However, if in Western countries this trend was rather a tribute, then in the USSR it had a more prosaic explanation. Soviet shoes were usually not too comfortable and could rub her legs. White socks served as a kind of protection against corns and discomfort. In addition, in conditions of not always perfectly clean streets of socks helped protect the shoes from pollution.

Interestingly, in the USSR, wearing socks with shoes was often associated with a certain social status. Girls from wealthy families could afford quality shoes that did not require additional protection, so they rarely resorted to this combination. But for most Soviet women, socks with shoes were not so much a fashion trend as a necessity.
