NATO, as an organization, will not cope with the defense of Europe without the involvement of the United States. This opinion was expressed by the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Mark Rutte during the joint with the British Prime Minister Kir Seniormer of the press conference, the Voice of America reports.

“NATO, or what this organization will be called there, without the United States - for many reasons it will not work,” Rutte answered the question of whether Europe should start planning his own future defense, which, perhaps, would not include the United States.

One of the grounds for this Rutta considers the large -scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. After all, the situation in Ukraine, according to NATO Secretary General, has a geopolitical scale and the consequences will be tangible far beyond the boundaries of the country.

“If you look at Ukraine, then this is not only Ukraine and Russia. Everything is very bad here. This is an ongoing geopolitical phenomenon. And the United States understand this, and the European side of NATO understands this. This is China, North Korea, Iran - all of them are connected with Russia. This is a geopolitical phenomenon that is now taking place in Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine should defeat not only for the sake of Ukraine, but also because of the geopolitical consequences. I know that the same thinking is still widespread in the USA, including in the White House, ”Rutta said.

US President Donald Trump puts pressure on NATO allies demanding to increase defense expenses to 5% of GDP - not one of the 32 countries of the Alliance has yet reached such an indicator, including states. Some analysts and officials believe that the costs of 5% of GDP for defense can be politically and economically impossible for almost all NATO members, as this will require billions of dollars of additional financing.

Nikolai Gavrys in the article “5% of GDP for defense for European countries: how much such a Donald Trump requirement analyzed how Trump’s demand for 5% of GDP will affect European countries accustomed to social budgets, and whether democratic states can compete with autocracy in the military.
