The screening of the biographical drama “Saint Exepurie” directed by Pablo Aguero (“The Three Musketeers”), starring Louis Garrel and Vincent Cassel, has started in Ukraine.. Focus was one of the first to watch the film and shares his impressions.

The creators of the biographical film take viewers to the center of Latin America in the 1930s, to the mountain range of the South American Cordillera: it is there that 30-year-old pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupery carries out deadly air routes every day for the Aeropostal postal company.. The company's airport consists of two hangars and a short runway in the middle of a dangerous wasteland, and the number of pilots killed along the route is in the dozens.

Saint-EX (as a colleague is called Antoine) works on a dangerous flight with a friend and senior pilot Henri Guillaume (Vincent Cassel). Men share a great sincere friendship. The film begins with an aircraft device in which Saint-EX falls: his plane makes an emergency landing on the water, after which he begins to sink. Guillaume saves a friend, swimming several tens of meters from the shore of a deserted island in ice water.

A couple of days later, Guillaume himself goes to a deadly mission through the Cordillera ridge and no longer gets in touch. Saint-Exupery undertakes a daring rescue mission in the icy desert of the murderous mountains at the limit of human capabilities.. The fate of Guillaume remains a mystery until the end of the story, during which St. EX not only carries out reconnaissance sorties, but also goes to ask for help from the local mafia in the nearest town. Of the Antoine assistants - only Noel (Diana Krueger), wife Henri Guillaume, who is absolutely sure that her husband is alive and found a temporary shelter for himself in conditions where no one is able to survive.

Throughout the entire film, you can’t help but feel that the film’s director is trying to create a fairy tale in the style of Saint-Exupery based on the story of Exupery himself.. Or at the very least, he is very inspired by the writer's talent and pays tribute to his work through his heroic biographical story.

On its way, Saint-EX meets the heroes who look more likely, characters from the red room of David Lynch than real people: a girl watching the wind and a little shepherd with a dead sheer in her arms. They speak in charades and hints, but only they can help Saint-Aix find Guillaume.

In some scenes of the film, Saint-Exupery himself looks like his little prince in search of his friend Guillaume. He visits the deserted slopes, lagoons and icy deserts of the Andes, like a little prince, different planets. The film, like the most popular story of Exupery, addresses the topics of love, friendship, indifference of those in power, losses, loneliness and, most importantly, hopes.

In a word, the picture looks as if Antoine de Saint-Exupery himself wrote the script for it. Perhaps the creators pursued this goal: the atmosphere, the color scheme of the scenes, the emotional intensity against the backdrop of deserted landscapes. Saint-EX stands on an ice hill with a fluttering long scarf of a pilot of a screw aircraft against a dark sky and a night ice desert. So the cover for the new edition of the fairy tale might look like.

The creators of the biographical film also showed Exupery not only as a dreamer and a brave pilot, but also as a talented engineer who was forced to make a breakthrough in the field of aerodynamics. One of the most eloquent scenes of Saint-Exupery demonstrates the ingenuity of a young pilot who draws inspiration in the flight of condors to allow his plane to cross the Cordillera. It uses warm winds to fly higher and finds a way to fly at night in zero visibility conditions. It looks ingenious and reckless at the same time for an era with very limited, by modern standards, technology. Saint-EX repeatedly risks life, simultaneously inventing engineering innovations in unimaginable conditions, and you will not fully know what this will lead to it.
