According to the results of an examination carried out by specialists from the National Scientific and Natural Museum of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the tusks belong to walruses. The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is an endangered species protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)..

Three of the six pieces make up one tusk, which appears to have been recently sprayed. There is an inscription on the tusk: Farewell, unwashed Chukotka, the country of canned food and stones, the country of increased salaries and alcohol-soaked people.

The CITES Convention provides that for the export of any protected animal or plant, living or dead, and any easily recognizable part or derivative thereof, it is necessary to first obtain permits issued by the administrative authorities of Ukraine to comply with the requirements of the Convention.

At the time of customs control, such documents were not provided to customs; they were not included in international postal shipments.
