American coach Kenny Ellis does not consider unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) a great boxer. The mentor of Gervonta Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) complained that today's fans know nothing at all about the athletes of the past.
Ellis stated this in an interview with the MillCity Boxing YouTube channel.. The 54-year-old specialist noted that Usik simply appeared out of nowhere, and therefore he has no historical background. Also, according to coach Davis, literally every boxer of the past would beat current athletes.
“I can’t put Usyk in the top 20 or anywhere else. A few years ago he appeared out of nowhere. That's why I can't quote it. A lot of fans were born in the 2000s and have simply seen the boxers that have appeared on TV since then.. If you look at the records of boxers of the past, even the contenders of those years would have beaten the current champions. It's not my disrespect, no. It's just reality,"
Earlier, at The Ring magazine ceremony, Usik made a real splash, winning three awards for 2024. In particular, Alexander was named the best boxer. After the show, the Ukrainian left a message for the public, in which he recalled the events in our country. Usik also met with Anthony Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs).
ESPN journalists suggested that Usik will retire in 2025. At the same time, our boxer has already named his next opponent.
