NASA astronaut Don Pettit pointed his camera at the green aurora, which flickered against city lights at night and was green in color.. The astronaut combined the resulting images of the colorful atmospheric phenomenon into a short video, which was posted on the social network X. At the same time, the astronaut did not indicate which region of the planet the ISS flew over and where the aurora was noticed.

Auroras occur on Earth when charged solar particles enter our planet's atmosphere.. This mainly occurs when geomagnetic storms occur on Earth, caused by plasma emissions from the Sun.. Solar particles interact with molecules of different gases in the Earth's atmosphere, which causes them to glow different colors. Most often, auroras are green in color..

Don Pettit arrived at the ISS last September aboard the Russian Soyuz spacecraft, and he is known for his extraterrestrial photography skills.

For example, last October, an astronaut took a photo that showed city lights in northern Mexico as bright, dynamic streaks.. That same month, Pettit photographed a sphere of water very similar to Jupiter, which he created on the ISS using food coloring.

Last November, Pettit photographed the trail left by the massive Starship rocket in Earth's atmosphere during its sixth test flight.. And in December, an astronaut took a surprisingly clear photo of distant stars and galaxies.

And on January 1, 2025, a NASA astronaut published a magnificent photo of another aurora.

Don Pettit, 69, is on his fourth space flight and is NASA's oldest active astronaut..

As Focus already wrote, this year there may be a record discovery of dark comets, thanks to which life could appear on Earth. The Vera Rubin Observatory could shed light on the nature of dark comets when it opens later this year..

Focus also wrote that NASA showed photographs of the surface of Mars when it changes with the beginning of the spring season on the Red Planet.
