Romania expects a sugar shortage and an increase in prices due to the fact that the largest supplier of goods to the country, Ukraine, banned the export of sugar from June 5 to September 15. This is reported by the Romanian edition of Observator.

To date, there are only two sugar factories in Romania, and through them, Romania can barely cover 35% of domestic sugar consumption, so imports from Ukraine were very important for it.

From October 2022 to April 2023, Romania imported almost 85 thousand tons of sugar from Ukraine, which is 26 times more compared to the same period last year. This represents 30% of all EU imports..

In particular, the plant in Ludos, in the absence of raw materials, imported more than 25,000 tons of sugar from Ukraine..

" But the manufacturer will no longer be able to supply us with this quantity. shoppers should certainly expect higher shelf prices. There are very few goods,"

Romanian farmers are also unable to provide the plants with raw materials, as the area under sugar beet in Romania decreased in 2022 by 54% compared to 2021, and production - by 64%.

Recall, on May 30, the Cabinet of Ministers set a zero quota for the export of sugar from Ukraine from June 5 to September 15, 2023.
