Children's Day was founded in 1949 in Paris by the decision of the Council of the Women's International Democratic Federation.

The first International Children's Day was celebrated in 1950 in 51 countries around the world.. The UN supported this initiative and declared the protection of the rights, life and health of children one of its priorities.

In 1959, the UN adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which defined the basic social and legal principles for the protection and well-being of children.. But this Declaration was of a recommendatory and declarative nature, and specific laws and international treaties were required to protect the rights of children..

On November 20, 1989, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which became the world constitution for children.. Ukraine ratified this convention on September 27, 1991.

Children's Day has been celebrated since 1998.

The number of children affected by the war is constantly growing. As of May 4, 2023, as a result of the massive shelling of Kherson, two more children aged 6 and 17 were injured. In total, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, 478 children have died and 963 have received injuries of various degrees of severity.. The most affected in the Donetsk region - 453 children.
