On the Day of Kyiv, the inhabitants of the capital survived a large-scale enemy attack by Shaheds. In social networks, the people of Kiev wrote that they felt the earthquake. The Main Center for Special Control does not officially confirm the information about the earthquake in the capital. Director of the Institute of Geophysics named after. Subbotina of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Oleksandr Kendzera told TSN whether there really were tremors in Kyiv.
He stressed that the earthquake allegedly occurred near Kyiv, in fact, was not.

“I think that these are the effects of explosions, namely the work of our air defense. Now no one can say for sure whether there was an earthquake or not, for one simple reason - there are only three observation stations near Kyiv, there are not enough of them to clearly distinguish explosions from an earthquake. If the shocks are strong enough - 2-3.3 points, then the available stations are enough to identify the earthquake. Even if there was an earthquake in Kiev, and it was weak, it was not “registered” on the equipment so that you could find out its spectrum, determine the volumes of its longitudinal and transverse waves,” said the seismologist.
The scientist explained that if a purely acoustic phenomenon occurs, then in this case there is a P-wave, and it is quite high, and there are no oscillations on the horizontal components.
“But here, both on horizontal and vertical waves, there were such obstacles that it was almost impossible to detect an earthquake.. If we had more observation stations, then even the weakest earthquake could be detected, but we have very few such stations,” he said..
Kendzera added that in order to fix small earthquakes, more observation stations are needed throughout Ukraine. So far, there are enough such stations in Ukraine only in the Carpathians, because earthquakes occur most often in this region..

“Earthquakes are very rare in Kyiv and central Ukraine.. But their recording and fixation is very important for scientists to reliably control the situation.. For example, recently there was an earthquake 20 kilometers west of Poltava. It happened on the border of the Ukrainian crystalline shield and the Dnieper-Donetsk depression. Its magnitude was 3.5 on the Richter scale.. The parameters of the earthquake were determined by almost all observation stations located on the territory of Ukraine. It was easy enough to recognize - an earthquake or the effect of explosions, ”explained the specialist..
According to the seismologist, the spectra of explosions and the spectra of earthquakes differ from each other in the records.
“They can be distinguished if the recording is against the background of interference, but if we have solid obstacles, then it is simply impossible to do this.. You can analyze and fantasize, but evidence of an earthquake will not be obtained,” the expert explained..
Kendzera emphasized that in peacetime, when the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was still normally funded, after each such controversial earthquake, scientists went to the territory where its source is located.. They conducted a survey of local residents, checked the information, checked for the presence of aftershocks with special portable equipment..

“Unfortunately, now all this is not being done.. Financing for the purchase of appropriate equipment has practically ceased. On the territory of Ukraine, if there are new devices, they were acquired with great difficulty and incredible efforts of enthusiasts. A logical question arises: why pay seismologists if you do not give them funds for equipment with which they could detail what should happen. It is very important. After all, if we are not even afraid of earthquakes with such a magnitude that occurred near Poltava, then it should be understood that theoretically stronger earthquakes can occur there in the future - this is the junction zone of large tectonic structures: the Dnieper-Donetsk depression and the Ukrainian crystalline massif. Elastic energy can accumulate there and be realized in the form of earthquakes.. Records of such earthquakes, if they are confirmed, are very important to determine which of the fault zones are active at a given stage of the geological development of the lithosphere on the territory of Ukraine.. And not only Ukraine. Of course, earthquakes are dealt with in Europe, the USA and on all continents. Ukraine is also dealing with this issue, but only at the level at which it can allocate funding for these works,” he concluded..
The scientist added that if we record with sufficient accuracy the dynamic processes taking place in different territories of our state, then we can assume what kind of tremors will be in the future and thus protect ourselves from the maximum possible earthquakes quite cheaply and efficiently, choosing such projects of buildings and structures,.
