Scientists say a magnetic storm could hit Earth on May 12. It will be associated with a coronal mass ejection (CME) that occurred on the Sun.

According to the space weather tracking website Space Weather, the CMS was supposed to reach Earth on May 11, but never arrived at the predicted time.. This means it's moving slower than expected..

Scientists predict that CMS will reach the planet on May 12 and cause a magnetic storm. It is expected to be strong, category G3, or moderate, category G2.

Magnetic storms are disturbances of the Earth's geomagnetic field with different duration and intensity.. They are associated with the streams of charged particles that the Sun throws out.. Magnetic storms can cause disruptions in communication, as well as affect the well-being of the elderly and weather-dependent people.. In particular, they may experience headache, dizziness, nausea, joint pain, fatigue, insomnia.

Recall that on April 21, a “slow” coronal mass ejection reached the Earth.. Usually such plasma flows take several days to reach the Earth, this one flew to the planet for a week.
