For the first time in Ukraine, a one-year-old child was transplanted skin from a posthumous donor, according to the First Medical Association of Lviv.

Andrei received burns of 25% of the skin - his chin, neck and chest - due to the fact that he pulled the kettle by the wire and poured boiling water over himself. He was immediately taken to the burn unit of the hospital.. During the night, the team of anesthesiologists stabilized the child's condition, however, the boy's skin in places was so affected by burns that it had no chance of self-healing..

The skin for transplantation was taken from the Skin Bank, established several years ago on the basis of one of the largest burn centers in Western Ukraine. After removing the upper, affected tissue fragments, burn surgeons closed the wounds with donor skin. It is not able to take root and can be on the patient's body for several weeks.. The purpose of such a transplant is to protect the burnt areas and create the most natural conditions necessary for the speedy healing of wounds.. And just a few weeks after that, Andrei was ready for the next step - autotransplantation - closing the wound with his own skin.
