Free travel in public transport: which categories of citizens have benefits

Free travel in public transport is provided for by Ukrainian legislation for certain categories of the population. In particular, for the military, the disabled, large families and children under the age of six. Citizens are often unable to exercise this right.

Specialist of the Regional Center for the provision of free secondary legal assistance in the Kyiv region Antonina Gospodarenko told on the Free Legal Aid platform which categories of citizens in Ukraine are entitled to free travel and where to apply if this right is denied.

Who is eligible for free travel.

In Ukraine, the following privileged categories of citizens have the right to free travel in fixed-route taxis:.

combatants and persons equated to them;

war invalids and persons equated to them;

conscripts;

military personnel who became disabled as a result of the war;

parents who are in the maintenance of a soldier who died or went missing during military service;

veterans of military service, internal affairs bodies, national police, tax police, State fire protection service, State penitentiary service, civil protection service,.

State services for special communications and information protection, the SBU and prosecutors;

police officers in the exercise of their powers, employees of the SBU in the performance of their duties;

rehabilitated persons who became disabled as a result of repression;

persons with disabilities of the first and second groups, children with disabilities, persons accompanying persons with disabilities of the first group or children with disabilities (within one accompanying person);

citizens affected by the Chernobyl disaster are classified in the first category, the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident are classified in the second category;

children who have been diagnosed with a disability related to the Chernobyl disaster;

children from large families;

children under six years of age (without occupying a separate seat).

What to do if you are unreasonably denied a free ride.

For this you need:.

find out the name of the carrier, his contact details (the information is usually kept by the driver);

last name, first name and patronymic of the driver;

write down the vehicle number;

time, route, as well as buy a ticket, save it, and in case of going to court, you must have witnesses.

If the driver of public transport refuses to follow the route until the beneficiary pays for the fare, it is worth calling the police. A driver who repeatedly unreasonably refuses to transport preferential categories of citizens may be fired.
