Invasion of Ukraine has hurt Russia's global reputation as most countries maintain a more positive attitude towards Ukraine, according to new poll. Politico writes about it.

Data from the Morning Consult global monitoring survey shows that Russia's reputation in all countries included in the sample deteriorated sharply in February 2022, when it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Sympathy for Russia tends to be higher in countries of the Global South such as Brazil and Mexico (the only country in the sample with a net positive rating for Russia (+5)) than among major European countries, the US and Japan.

Morning Consult data shows that UK adults have the most unfavorable attitude towards the Russian Federation (-79 percentage points), followed by residents of Japan (-75 percentage points).

A similar attitude is shared by such EU countries as Germany (-68), France (-68), Italy (-69) and Spain (-69). US public opinion looks somewhat less hostile to Russia (-62) as the poll also shows approval of US military and economic support for Ukraine is weaker among GOP supporters..

Despite Russia's tarnished reputation, poll data suggests Ukraine's support is not unanimous. Asian countries, including China, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, maintain a negative attitude towards Ukraine.

More worrisome for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is that public sentiment in EU countries such as France and Germany, which play a key role in imposing sanctions on Russia and providing military support to Ukraine, is not favorable for Kyiv.. Although Russia is more unpopular, part of the adult population of these countries also have a negative attitude towards Ukraine (-4 percentage points).
