The Sea2Sea freight rail corridor, which is supposed to connect northern Greece and Bulgaria to the Romanian border, is expected to carry cargo worth 650 million euros and will allow the redirection of significant volumes of maritime cargo from the Bosphorus to the railway. The Sea2Sea project is being created to develop a railway alternative that will connect the Greek ports of Thessaloniki, Kavala and Alexandroupoli with the Bulgarian Black Sea ports of Varna and Burgas, and also extend to the port of Rousse on the Danube and the Bulgarian-Romanian border.

Greece and Bulgaria intend to create a joint company to manage the project. At the same time, both parties will try to include it in the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF II) financial program..

As for Greece, the country is investing about 4 billion. euros to railway projects in its territory. Construction contracts will be signed in 2023, and work should be completed by 2027-2028. It is planned to modernize 382 km of railway lines with electrification, construction of second tracks and replacement of signaling systems. This will improve speed and increase throughput.

According to research by the Greek engineering company ERGOSE, the geostrategic and logistical value of the Sea2Sea megaproject cannot be overlooked..
