Starting from August 2022, pharmacies in Ukraine will dispense antibiotics for customers only with a prescription from a doctor. The only exceptions will be temporarily occupied territories and territories where direct hostilities are taking place.. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health.

According to the agency, this approach to the sale of antibiotics is an important step in countering the global problem of antibiotic resistance and will allow tracking data on the prescription and volume of use of drugs of this type in Ukraine..

“A pharmacist will be able to dispense an antibiotic in a pharmacy in three ways: by an electronic prescription (if the pharmacy is connected to the UEPH), by a paper prescription and an information certificate, which will be equated to an official document during the transition period. The patient will be able to purchase an antibiotic by prescription at any pharmacy. To do this, it is enough to present a certificate or a paper prescription to a pharmacy worker,” said Minister of Health Viktor Lyashko..

The Ministry of Health also noted that the new rules do not apply to temporarily occupied territories and areas of hostilities, where obtaining prescriptions is complicated by objective reasons.. There, pharmacies will be able to continue to dispense prescription antibacterial drugs to patients without a doctor's prescription during martial law..

A separate procedure for the sale of antibiotics is provided for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, volunteer and charitable organizations.

“A norm is proposed that allows military administrations, units of the Armed Forces, volunteer and charitable organizations to purchase prescription medicines for wartime needs without a prescription from entities licensed to carry out economic activities for the production and wholesale of medicines,” the Ministry of Health reports..
