The GIPL gas pipeline began to operate between Poland and Lithuania, which is the interconnector of these two countries and actually provided the opportunity for further gas supplies between Eastern Europe and other Baltic countries. Serhiy Makogon, General Director of the GTS Operator of Ukraine, specified that the expansion of fuel supply opportunities will also apply to Ukraine:.

“In the coming days, a tanker with a cargo of LNG for Poland will arrive at the liquefied gas terminal in Klaipeda. And after the completion of the Poland-Slovakia interconnector this summer, Ukraine will also receive access to LNG terminals in Poland and the Baltic countries,” he said..

Makogon also added that the launch of an interconnector between Poland and Lithuania complicates the attempts of the Russian Gazprom to blackmail these countries with gas..

Despite the fact that Russian gas is rapidly increasing transit to Europe, EU countries are increasingly working on the development of projects that reduce economic dependence on the northeastern neighbor.

In particular, we are talking about gas pipelines Greece - Bulgaria; Romania - Bulgaria and Poland - Czech Republic. The latter is still more than 90% dependent on fuel from the Russian Federation.

We also recently reported that the EU accused Russia of violating contracts after unilaterally cutting off gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland.
