Taking into account the aggravation of the situation in the east of Ukraine and the authorities' urgent recommendations for the immediate evacuation of residents of the eastern regions, Ivano-Frankivsk announced that it was ready to receive migrants in the future. The mayor of the regional center Ruslan Martsinkiv said this in an interview with the Commander-in-Chief..

“About 33,000 officially registered migrants already live in the city, but in reality there are 45,000 of them.. It is clear that it will be quite problematic to accept an additional amount, but in the short term we are ready. That is, we have schools, a certain number of mattresses, logistics are better than it was in the first weeks.. Well, we also see that residents of Kyiv, Kiev, Chernihiv, Sumy regions are gradually returning home,” he said..

Despite the objective difficulties, the city authorities are confident that they will be able to cope.

“I think that in general the decision to evacuate people from the Donetsk and Lugansk regions is correct and timely, because it is very difficult to fight when there are a lot of civilians around. For our part, we will try to shelter people. Many IDPs have even found work in Ivano-Frankivsk,” the mayor said..

According to Martsinkiv, the city is able to shelter about 100,000 more people by placing people in schools and kindergartens..

“But this is a critical figure for the infrastructure of Ivano-Frankivsk,” Martsinkiv stressed..

He cannot yet assess whether this is a burden on the city..

“Of course, there are also enterprises that move to the city. Of the migrants, some are richer, some are poorer, and here we must give everyone the opportunity to. It is clear that the richer rent rooms in hotels or apartments and thus invest in the city's economy.. And we settle the poorest in schools, gyms, gardens. Established a lot of courses: shooting, medical care, the Ukrainian language, the national liberation struggle, city tours, so that people get a little distracted. We feed some people for free, someone can have lunch for 30 hryvnias. There are huge queues for help from the state, 3,500-4,000 people register every day in the central administrative centers,” said the mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk.
