Russian invaders committed 135 war crimes against the cultural heritage of Ukraine

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy as of March 31 has already recorded 135 war crimes of the Russian army against the cultural heritage of Ukraine. This was announced by the head of the ICIP Alexander Tkachenko in Telegram.

“Every time it is difficult to publish statistics on the destruction of cultural heritage. But they should cover these figures so that not only Ukrainians, but also the world know about them,” Tkachenko said..

According to him, as a result of Russian aggression, religious buildings suffered the most - a total of 59 objects.. These are churches of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, Protestant prayer houses, Islamic mosques and Jewish synagogues.

In total, 58 monuments of architecture and urban planning were destroyed or damaged, of which 5 are of national importance.

25 valuable objects of historical development were damaged - ancient buildings of the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries, 10 monuments - memorial steles or sculptures associated with historical events. The invaders also damaged 12 museums and historical and architectural reserves, 6 theaters and cinemas, 5 libraries.

According to Tkachenko, crimes were recorded in 10 regions of Ukraine and in Kyiv.

54 of them were committed in Kharkiv region, 22 - in Donetsk; 16 - in Chernihiv; 10 - in Kievskaya; 9 - in Luhansk; 9 - in Sumy; 5 - in Kyiv; 4 - in Zaporozhye; 4 - in Zhytomyr; 1 - in Dnepropetrovsk and 1 - in Kherson.

The Minister of Culture and Information Policy recalled that the destruction of cultural heritage sites is a war crime under the 1954 Hague Convention.

Earlier, in a few days, fifty communities moved to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
