The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine approved a new list of animal species that will be included in the fourth edition of the National Red Book.

The updated list includes 687 animal species. In the third edition of the Red Book of Ukraine 2009, there were 543 species of animals. The list now contains 14 species of annelids (up from 8), 53 species of molluscs (19), 357 species of arthropods (263) and 260 species of chordates (245).
In particular, the following species were added to the Red Book:.
fat-fingered cancer;
water strider naiad;
golden cocoon;
big greese;
crested newt;
Lindholm lizard;
Steinitz goby;
river eel;
ordinary podust;
small gopher.
Depending on the state of the species and the degree of threat of their extinction, the species are divided into categories:.
insufficiently known (28 species);
endangered (162);
vulnerable (277);
rare (201);
missing (eight);
unvalued (11).
The Red Book of Ukraine primarily includes relict and endemic species, species located on the border of the range, species of special scientific value, as well as species, the distribution of which is rapidly decreasing as a result of human economic activity..
