Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and Rafael Warnock take the lead in Georgia's Senate elections. This is evidenced by data published by Fox News..
After processing 97% of the ballots, Ossoff is ahead of Republican and incumbent Senator David Purdue by just 3,560 votes (0.08%). Warnock's rival, incumbent Republican Senator Kelly Lofler, is 40,575 votes behind him (1%). CNN analysts are confident that Warnock has already secured his victory.
If the final difference between candidates is less than 0.5%, the loser will be able to demand a recount.
If both Ossoff and Warnock win, Republicans and Democrats will each have 50 votes in the Senate. The vote of the vice-president-elect of the United States Kamala Harris will be decisive.
In the November elections, Purdue overtook Ossoff (49.7% - 48%), and Warnock - Lofler (32.9% - 25.9%). None of the candidates scored more than 50% and a second round was ordered by Georgia law.
Senate approval is needed to approve laws and key government appointments.
