Canada could not be elected to the Security Council, the main UN body in the field of international security.

United Nations General Assembly elects four new non-permanent members of UN Security Council. This is reported by DW.

Thus, in the years 2021-2022, the Security Council will include India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway. Kenya and Djibouti will fight for another place.

Canada also claimed a seat in the Security Council from Western countries, however, it received fewer votes than Ireland and Norway.

REFERENCE. The Security Council is one of the six main organs of the UN, which has the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security..

The Council is authorized to make decisions that Member States are required to implement in accordance with the UN Charter. In practice, the body is engaged in introducing sanctions against violating states (including military operations), introducing peacekeepers into conflict zones and post-conflict regulation.

The Council consists of five permanent members (USA, Russia, Great Britain, China, France) and 10 non-permanent members elected by the General Assembly on the principle of equal regional representation.

Permanent members have veto power, which has repeatedly blocked decisions that could harm them.
