Warsaw is determined to complete the construction of the canal through the Vistula spit in order to link the Polish part of the bay with the Baltic Sea. Now ships can go here only through Russian waters. Meanwhile, as emphasized in the government, we are talking about the border of the European Union and NATO. During a visit to the construction site, President Andrzej Duda said that the construction of the canal would be of strategic importance:.

“This is an investment that will strengthen Polish sovereignty, strengthen Polish independence and Polish freedom,” said Duda, quoted by Euronews.

Some opposition associations and ecologists oppose the canal through the Vistula spit. Politicians pay attention to the cost of the project and doubt that it will pay off. Eco-activists talk about senseless destruction of natural territories.

Rafal Tshaskovsky, candidate from the largest opposition bloc Civil Platform, promised to stop construction if he wins the upcoming presidential election.. This item was included in his program by agreement with the Green Party.
