Andrea Ammon, head of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, considers the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic in Europe inevitable. She stated this to The Guardian, reports "

“The question is when it will be and how big, that’s the question, in my opinion,” Ammon said.

She recalled that the current epidemic has not yet ended, although many governments have already eased restrictions.

“If you look at the characteristics of the virus, look at what is happening in different countries from the point of view of the immunity of the population - and the indicators are not so impressive, from 2% to 14%, which leaves 85% to 90% of the population vulnerable. The virus is around us and spreads much more than in January and February.

I do not want to paint a picture of the end of the world, but I think that we should be realistic. That now is not the time to completely relax, "

However, she is convinced that the second wave will not be inevitably catastrophic if people follow the rules and the distance.

As of Wednesday, 158,134 people have died from coronavirus in the EU, UK, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland.

The UK has the highest mortality rate in Europe - 35,341, followed by Italy (32169) and France (28,022).
