Scientists have discovered an animal that can do without oxygen. This is Henneguya salminicola. He is a distant relative of jellyfish, a representative of the class Myxozoa - parasitic invertebrates. Its owners can be fish or worms that live underwater, writes Science Alert.

Henneguya salminicola does not spend energy on maintaining its own mitochondria. It simply “steals” ATP molecules (a universal source of energy for all biochemical processes taking place in living systems, in particular for the formation of enzymes) in a host.

Note, previously, scientists believed that only unicellular eukaryotes could exist without oxygen. However, experts have proven that more complex organisms may not breathe.

Look at the photo gallery: An animal living without oxygen has been found. As previously reported, by 2070, a third of animals and plants may disappear..

We also wrote that an unidentified toothy creature was found in Mexico.. A mysterious animal was discovered by a company of local residents on the shores of the Mexican peninsula of Punta Mita.
