In a new work, the results of which were published in the journal PLOS One, scientists from Belgrade University, together with colleagues from the University of Pristina and representatives of the Israeli medical center Hadassah, interviewed two thousand university students in Belgrade and Pristina, studying their physical and mental well-being.

After analyzing the collected data, the researchers came to the conclusion that signs of clinical depression are several times more likely to occur in those who have nicotine addiction. Smokers also have difficulty communicating with people, as well as frequent complaints of loss of strength. Scientists still can not reliably explain the relationship between smoking and mental problems, but the authors of the study are sure of its presence.

Recall that earlier, by analyzing DNA, scientists established the relationship between smoking and the development of schizophrenia and depression. The authors of this work suggest that nicotine can affect serotonin and dopamine, which in turn are associated with the onset of schizophrenia and depression..
