More than 60 people died and about 100 were injured after the train drove into a crowd near the city of Amritsar in the state of Punjab, located in the north of the country, local BBC police reported.

The victims were on the railroad tracks, marking one of the main Hindu festivals, Dusser, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

The spectators watched the burning of the stuffed mythological demon Ravana and the fireworks as they approached the railway.

Some reports suggest that the organizers of the holiday asked the crowd to move away from the fireworks, while others said that the people themselves approached the railway track because they were afraid that the burning stuffed animal would collapse.

In addition, those on the rails filmed the festival on their phones, so they could not notice in time the approaching train, which moved at high speed.

The authorities said that the main efforts will be sent to the hospitalization of victims.
