Experts told about the importance of healthy sleep.
Numerous studies have suggested that a lack of sleep can lead to dangerous diseases. Doctors told about the most common health risks.
Alzheimer's disease.
Studies of scientists from the Johns Hopkins University shows that lack of sleep can both be the cause of Alzheimer's disease and accelerate its course. Those who complained of poor sleep recorded more beta amyloid deposits in the brain - a characteristic sign of Alzheimer's disease.
Obesity and diabetes.
American scientists from the University of Chicago found that a lack of sleep can cause obesity, which, in turn, leads to diabetes. Those who slept for four hours had a higher level of fatty acids, which can slow down metabolism and the ability to regulate blood sugar levels. Those who slept normally did not show signs of obesity and pre-diabetes.
Ulcerative colitis.
This inflammatory bowel disease, which manifests itself in ulcers of the mucosa of the esophagus. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease can be caused by excess sleep. Scientists have recorded an increased risk of ulcerative colitis as the duration of sleep decreases to six hours or less.
Cardiovascular diseases.
Deficiency of sleep is associated with the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases. The study, which was presented at the congress of the European Cardiology Society, shows that two-thirds of men who experienced a heart attack suffered from a sleep disorder.
Moreover, in men who complained of poor sleep, the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack, in which the heart muscle dies) was 2.6 times higher and stroke was 1.5 times higher.
