A group of scientific experts from the University of Dundee, Queen Mary's University of London and the Senger Institute found great harm with some popular medicines for the body. It is about medicines, which, among other things, are prescribed for the treatment of various intestinal diseases.

Scientists suspected of the ability to cause the appearance of skin cancer known drug azathioprine. It is actively used for the therapy of inflammatory bowel diseases, arthritis, vasculitis. The representatives of science already had a previous suspicion that this drug is capable of provoking the development of skin cancer. The new study also ended with a verdict of scientists that the use of azathioprine leads to an increase in photosensitivity and an increased risk of mutations in skin cells leading to the appearance of squamous cell carcinoma.

The authors of the new work noted that patients undergoing treatment with azathioprine should undergo additional examinations that would allow timely diagnosis of existing lesions. In addition, they must take care of the year-round protection from the sun.

Researchers studied the cases of 37 patients with skin cancer. In general, the number of cases of this disease identified in connection with the use of drugs with azathioprine was not very significant. Nevertheless, scientists are convinced that this connection must be carefully examined. People with intestinal diseases and arthritis were advised to carefully protect themselves from solar ultraviolet radiation.
