The government of Lopez Obrador can be a disaster for both the Mexican economy and Mexican democracy. The new president of Mexico will be the former Mayor of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, whom supporters call simply Amlo - by the first letters of the name and surname. Lopez Obrador tried to become president several times, but lost to candidates from systemic political forces. But now, long before the elections, he was considered their favorite and scored more than 50 percent of the vote.
In Mexico, a new era begins.
Some observers explain the success of Lopez Obrador with corruption, poverty and an unprecedented wave of violence in the country. But these are too simple explanations. Corruption, poverty and violence were the main Mexican problems before. What did not prevent Mexican voters from hoping that these problems would be resolved by traditional political parties. Moreover, throughout the twentieth century, Mexico in general rules one party, the candidate from which among the outsiders of the current election race. Then the replacement of the authorities was ensured by intrigues and conflicts within the ruling party itself. Presidents from different parties, Mexicans choose only the last two decades - that is, almost like us.
The main reason for Lopez Obrador's success is not corruption and poverty, but Trump. Ordinary Mexicans could not help but irritate the caution and politeness with which the outgoing President Enrique Pena Neto responded to the attacks of the American leader. But Neto is a professional politician and understood how important relations for Mexico are with the United States.
Lopez Obrador did not restrain himself by convention. He promised to replace the American president. He led the company, like Trump himself - with contempt for state institutions, journalists, facts, democracy itself. And he won. And now it can be a problem for Trump himself - because it is not clear what the American president can do if the neighboring country becomes a generator of instability, and its president - the conductor and protector of this instability. No wall will help here.
Of course, Trump in a poor country is not at all the same as Trump in a rich state. Trump in a country that has not yet understood what democracy is is not at all the same as Trump in a state with well-developed institutions. The rule of Lopez Obrador can be a disaster for both the Mexican economy and Mexican democracy. And examples of this development of events - many. Let's recall Hugo Chavez, Vladimir Putin or Viktor Yanukovich.
From Yanukovych, Ukrainians were saved by the fact that he was an anti-national president who did not want to protect the country from Moscow's takeover. And besides, the capital of this country is a city with a developed national consciousness. Imagine for a moment that Yanukovych - with all his other gangster qualities - would be a defender of Ukrainian national interests in the international arena. Or that the capital of Ukraine is not Kyiv, but Donetsk. And we will quickly understand that we would still have lived under Yanukovych's dictatorship. And no people, no oligarchs would have done anything.
In a country with undeveloped state institutions and a demoralized population of the dictator, it is enough to elect the president only once. Everything else he does himself.
If the Ukrainians do not believe in this - in 2019 they can be sure of this.
