Georgia began the procedure for severing diplomatic relations with Syria in response to the decision of Damascus to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This is stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.
Official Tbilisi, of course, accused Russia of manipulating the Syrian regime, which recognized the "illegal occupation of Abkhazia and Tskhinval," and even "ethnic cleansing".
At present, five states have recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia: Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru, Syria. In the UN documents, the republics are considered as the territory of Georgia.
In August 2008, there was an armed conflict between Georgia on the one hand, and South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Russia on the other. As a result, Russia recognized the independence of the two republics, after which Tbilisi severed diplomatic relations with Moscow.
In the old days, such a step meant the declaration of war. Now the rupture of diplomatic relations has shifted to the category of political moves. According to experts, the decision of the Georgian government is purely political and is unlikely to somehow change the current situation.
