As you know, a sedentary lifestyle can provoke the development of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Researchers from the University of Liverpool have found out: health problems appear after 2 weeks of a sedentary lifestyle. Fortunately, these negative consequences are reversible, says The Daily Mail.
The study involved 45 people (mean age 36 years). Volunteers did not regularly engage in any kind of physical activity, such as jogging, but each day passed at least 10,000 steps. Participants led a sedentary lifestyle for 2 weeks.
Volunteers traveled to work by car or public transport, used elevators and escalators instead of stairs, and spent the weekend at home in front of a TV or computer. Participants wore special devices that followed their activity. They were also asked to stick to their usual diet and keep a diary of food.
After 2 weeks, scientists assessed the health status of volunteers. The researchers found that participants had increased waist size and body fat, decreased muscle mass and cardiorespiratory stamina. In addition, participants reported a decrease in insulin sensitivity. All this was most noticeable in people who had a close relative with type 2 diabetes.
Then the participants were asked to again become active. After 2 weeks, the above problems disappeared. Experts recommend that you be as active as possible in everyday life, for example, walking more often, climbing stairs and making purchases in a supermarket, and not on the Internet.
