One of the architects of the SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative) program, known in the 1980s as a "star wars", an American expert in international relations, an emeritus professor at Boston University Angelo Kodovilla called the Asia Times a means that would help the US destroy the latest weapons of Russia.

The expert believes that to counteract the latest Russian and Chinese weapons, it makes no sense to fully reproduce the SDI, which is now obsolete, but some of its elements have not lost relevance today, and that's why the US military should pay special attention to them.

Kodovila believes that only two space-based systems can withstand the latest Russian and Chinese intercontinental ballistic missiles: orbital optical sensors detecting ground launches and lasers destroying missiles. The expert separately notes that these systems allow to intercept the ballistic missile exclusively at take-off (that is before the detachable warhead detaches from the carrier with individual guidance units).

According to the Codovils, such a laser was ready for launch in the US already in 1978, and by now such technologies have advanced far ahead. According to the expert, it is easier to destroy a flying rocket from the space, rather than from the ground, because in the first case the course of the laser beam is not distorted (that is, it is not refracted in the atmosphere).

To detect the early launch of ballistic missiles, Koviwila considers systems like the SBIRS (Space-Based Infrared System) to be part of a grouping in a low-earth orbit (that is, SBIRS Low). Work on the relevant project in the US was frozen as far back as 1972 (only elements of SBIRS High are now deployed).

Space-based means currently available to the US, it is almost impossible to intercept flying hypersonic drone, the expert believes. The threat of such weapons can be eliminated only by destroying the corresponding enemy pads, concludes the Codeouville.

Announced in March 1983, the 40th President of the United States Ronald Reagan SOI (Strategic Defense Initiative) assumed the deployment of space-based systems, making, according to the intentions of the creators, impossible to defeat the territories of the United States and allied countries with intercontinental ballistic missiles of the enemy.
