Active alcohol abuse three times increases the risk of developing senile dementia. 39% of patients diagnosed with this disease before the age of 65 show signs of alcohol damage to the brain.

Drinking too much alcohol can increase the risk of developing senile dementia three-fold. For the first time in history, scientists have determined that alcoholism is the single largest risk factor for dementia. In a study involving 32 million patients, of whom 1.1 million had senile dementia, there was a particularly clear association between alcohol use and the early form of the disease. As many as 39% of patients suffering from senile dementia and those who fell ill before age 65 had signs of alcoholic brain damage. Those who were diagnosed with dementia later had less communication, and only 3% of cases were associated with alcohol.

French scientists have proved that people regularly abusing alcohol are 3.35 times more likely to experience senile dementia at any age, compared with those who drink alcohol moderately. Researchers analyzed records in hospitals, where patients were registered, delivered with acute cases of alcoholism. The findings of this study can be attributed to those who chronically abuse alcohol by the standards of the World Health Organization. WHO determines drunkenness at a level of more than 7.5 doses of alcohol per day, which amounts to one and a half liters of beer, and for women - 5 units per day or more than 4 glasses of wine.

Note that the main cause of senile dementia in most cases remains genetics, but experts are constantly looking for lifestyle factors that can affect the occurrence of this incurable disease. And now the largest such factor is the abuse of alcoholic beverages. The list of other factors includes smoking, obesity and high blood pressure.
