Vitaly Portnikov: I can not make peace with Russia with Kurtz

The new Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurtz, on the eve of his first visit to Moscow, delighted the hosts with the words that "a long-term peace in Europe is possible only with Russia, and not against Russia".

No one will argue with these words of the young politician. But only European countries did not start a conflict with Moscow, Ukraine did not attack Russia. Everything is exactly the opposite: this Russia violated the territorial integrity of Ukraine, as before - the territorial integrity of Georgia and Moldova. And the conflict of the European Union with Russia is connected with the aggressive actions of Moscow.

Peace in Europe with Russia is very easy to establish - for this Russia itself must give up its aggressive ambitions, withdraw troops from the Donbass and the Crimea, help restore the territorial integrity of Georgia and Moldova. A simple homework assignment - if not for Putin, with whom Sebastian Kurtz will meet, then for his successors.

Kurtz is younger than Putin for several decades - and if he retains political dignity, then he has every chance to see exactly that peace with Russia, about which he speaks.

But the Austrian Chancellor wants "peace today". And such a world does not mean a settlement, but its imitation.

That is why Sebastian Kurtz was among politicians who talk about the gradual lifting of sanctions against Moscow - in exchange for Russia's implementation of its part of the Minsk agreements. The first who put forward such a concept was the current president of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier. He is supported by the head of the German foreign ministry, Sigmar Gabriel. And now in the club of "gradual abolition" was the Austrian Chancellor. Which is not surprising, given the interests of Russian business in Austria and the specific composition of the present coalition government of this country, from the point of view of European values.

But Kurtz, like Steinmeier, will not succeed. For tango, as you know, we need two. Putin is not going to dance with the Europeans. If the Russian president were interested in partial easing of sanctions in exchange for partial implementation of the Minsk agreements, he would have long agreed to this. But he does not agree! And this is logical.

Because the partial implementation of the Minsk agreements implies - to begin with - the cessation of hostilities on the line of demarcation. And the beginning of a peaceful life for citizens - those same citizens, who are concerned about the Austrian Chancellor.

But that's just why Putin? Why should he Donbass, from the territory of which they will not shoot? Which of the non-healing wounds will simply turn into an object for endless negotiations on the status of the region, the procedure for holding elections and the places of deployment of peacekeepers? Donbass, which will be forgotten the day after the war is over?.

And not only in the world will forget. In Ukraine, too. Because it will be like a cut piece that will someday return to the country. Why is this Putin? How will this help his plan of destabilization of Ukraine and the return of our entire country "to the native harbor" of Russian imperialism?.

That is why Kurtz's good wishes - as well as earlier proposals of German politicians - will remain words. European visitors can expect that Putin will give them the opportunity to save face - but they will not wait for such a gift from the Russian president.

In fact, Kurtz's formula sounds a little different. It is possible either the shameful surrender of the European Union to Russia, or a protracted conflict with the Kremlin. On the world in the near future do not have to count.
