The Russian Defense Ministry plans to limit the use of personal means of cellular communication among military personnel, replacing smartphones with the simplest models of button telephones. This is reported by the newspaper Kommersant, citing sources in the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces. Thus, the military intends to deal with information leaks. Innovation can begin to act as early as March 1, 2018. According to the publication, the chief of the 8th Directorate of the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces, Yury Kuznetsov, has already compiled a list of 11 phone models from Nokia, TeXet, Alcatel and Samsung manufacturers, "authorized to use" servicemen, including guiding units. The list shows the simplest button devices costing from 688 (for the Alcatel One Touch 1020D handset) to 2313 rubles (for the Samsung GT-E1272 clamshell). They meet several basic requirements: they use the GSM 900/1800 standards (a number of models are 900/1800/1900), they are equipped with polycarbonate cover, they have the function of sending SMS, built-in alarm clock, calculator, calendar, headphone jack, and some - also a flashlight or even a compartment for the second SIM card. In the phone models recommended by the General Staff of the Russian Federation, there is no GPS / GLONASS navigation, nor is there an integrated photo or video camera. In recent years, the Ministry of Defense has experienced many problems when, due to leakage of information from smartphones, it became known about the participation of Russians in conflicts in the Crimea, eastern Ukraine and Syria. On February 13, the Izvestia newspaper reported that the Ministry of Defense had also developed rules for using the Internet for the military, according to which they were recommended to stop using social networks and disable geolocation in phones.
