Finnish scientists are sure that this spring there will be a record number of pups of the rare saimens seal - more than 90 squirrels. This is reported by the Forest Administration of Finland.

This year, there were ideal conditions for the reproduction of these seals. After heavy snowfalls near the water, many natural nests of frozen snow formed. In addition, volunteers have poured additional snowdrifts, so there are no problems with the seal on the living space, notes EuroPulse.

The Saimaan seal is named after Lake Saima, where this subspecies resides. The lake, together with the seals, was isolated from the Baltic Sea about 8 thousand years ago, since then the Seyman seals have features of the structure that distinguish them from their closest relatives from the appearance of ringed seals.

Now there are only about 100 females of the Seymen seal that can breed. According to experts, if you do not protect the seals and their habitat, the subspecies may die out. The Forest Administration of Finland plans to increase the number of the population to 400 individuals by 2025 as part of the program for the protection of the Seymen seal.
