Such a discovery helped to discover the revolutionary technology of the lidar. It allows you to clean up the crowns of trees from aerial photographs of the landscape in digital format, so scientists have discovered the ruins of houses, palaces, roads, terraces and complex irrigation systems.

According to archaeologist Thomas Harrison, the images clearly show that the whole region was a system of settlement, the scale and density of its population was greatly underestimated.

Garrison believes that with new evidence obtained through lidar technology in Central America and Angkor Wat, scientists can assume that these complex communities could form in the tropics and come out from there.

Scientists say that this finding indicates that the population of the Mayan civilization was significantly larger than it is commonly believed.

Previously, it was estimated at five million people, while now researchers believe that we can talk about 10-15 million.

As previously reported in URA-Inform, scientists said that under the surface of Mars at a depth of one to two meters, there are extensive layers of pure water ice with a thickness of 100 meters.
