The Supreme Court of Japan on January 19 rejected the appeal of the verdict of Katsui Takahashi, one of the members of the totalitarian sect Aum Shinrikyo. As the NHK writes, thus ended the last of 192 criminal trials, which for more than 20 years were conducted over the adepts of the sect. Takahashi hid from the authorities for 17 years. In 2012, after years of unsuccessful attempts to locate Takahashi, the police launched an unprecedented campaign to find him - his images were posted in newspapers and on TV, as well as on the Internet, on the streets and in police stations. A month later Takahashi was caught. In 2015, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment for complicity in the murders (including during the terrorist attack in the Tokyo Metro in 1995). Now the Supreme Court confirmed the verdict. Completion of the trial of Takahashi opens the way for the execution of the death sentence of Sekou Akahar. The leader of Aum Shinrikyo was sentenced to death by hanging in 2004, in addition to him, to the death penalty, the courts were sentenced by 12 more members of the sect. Until now, none of the criminals was executed, including because their testimony could be required in ongoing trials of other members of Aum Shinrikyo. Aum Shinrikyo began operations in the late 1980s. Seku Akahara called himself the reincarnation of Christ and predicted the end of the world in 1997, which only members of the sect will be able to survive. The organization from the very beginning behaved aggressively towards former supporters and authorities, carrying out actions with application of violence. The most famous crime of the organization was a terrorist attack in the Tokyo metro in 1995: sectarians sprayed sarin poison gas at three subway stations, killing 13 people; several thousand suffered. After that, Aum Shinrikyo's activities were finally banned, and the authorities began a large-scale criminal prosecution of her followers.
