It is dedicated to the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. The word "baptizing" verbatim in translation from Greek means "plunging into water". Baptized Christ the prophet John, immediately recognized him as the Savior, expected by the Jewish people.
According to the legend, when Jesus came out of the water, a holy spirit came down on him in the form of a dove, and a voice from heaven testified of him as a son of God.
Hence the second name of the feast is the Epiphany, because believers are convinced that this is how God appeared to people in three persons: the father who spoke from heaven, the son of Christ and the holy spirit in the form of a dove.
According to the Gospel story, after his baptism, Jesus Christ, led by the Spirit, withdrew to the desert to seclude himself and pray and fast to prepare for the fulfillment of the mission with which he came to earth.
Recall, as reported URA-Inform, on the eve of Thursday, all religious people celebrated a large church holiday Epiphany Eve. And in spite of the fact that there were festive services in the churches, this evening it is customary to spend in peace and humility.
