GPS-trackers allowed to halve the number of bicycle hijacks in the Netherlands

Police-owned bicycles with trackers were parked in places where two-wheeled vehicles were often stolen. The police could track the movements of the bike and, if hijacked, calculate where the "professional" thieves hide. For the year, such a "bait" caught more than 1.6 thousand times, and thanks to this tactic conducted 1,2 thousand arrests, writes EuroPulse.

The Dutch police in the arsenal of about 300 bicycles of popular brands, 70 of them - electric. In the places where such bicycles were "started", the number of thefts itself decreased drastically (first of all, near university campuses).

In total for 2017 the police received about 48 thousand applications for the theft of bicycles, this is 13 thousand less than in 2106.
