UEFA President Alexander Cheferin promised to donate one percent of the salary to the Common Goal project, which aims to fund football charity funds around the world.
The president of the European Football Union Alexander Cheferin announced that he will donate one percent of his salary to the Common Goal project.
"I am convinced that football has a power that can change the world. I was inspired by the example of Juan Mata, who became part of the Common Goal project. It's great that an active player takes part in this movement. Football has given a lot to the players, and now they are trying to give something in return, "said Cheferin.
"I encourage all members of the football family - players, coaches, clubs and leagues - to show that they care about social responsibility and invest in projects in the development of which they believe".
Cheferin met at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon with the founders of the project Juan Mata and Jurgen Griesbek.
The first player who agreed to donate the Common Goal project one percent of his salary was midfielder Manchester United and the Spanish national team Juan Mata. The project aims to finance effective charitable institutions around the world.
"I want to express my deep gratitude to Alexander for his participation in the Common Goal project and I can only welcome his decision and belief that football can change the world for the better. This is the first football leader who became a participant in our project, and I hope many will follow suit, "Mata added..
The Common Goal project is an initiative of streetfootballworld, a non-governmental organization that has created a global network of more than 120 local charities that use football to solve social problems. For example, they struggle against gender inequality in India, organize peacekeeping in Colombia and participate in the integration of refugees in Germany. Common Goal is a public movement of football players, coaches and fans, united by the goal to change the world for the better.
More than 30 players, including Mats Hummels, Giorgio Chiellini, Alex Morgan, Veronica Bokete, Serge Gnabri, Shinji Kagawa, and coach Julian Nagelsmann have already publicly announced their support for this initiative.
