The first project of solar energy in Chernobyl will be completed next month. It will be a step forward in the plans to invest 100 million euros in the construction of renewable energy sources in the radioactive exclusion zone.

This is reported by Bloomberg, adding that the project belongs to the Ukrainian company Rodina Energy Group Ltd and the German Enerparc AG. The capacity of a solar power plant reaches one megawatt, and its construction cost 1 million euros.

"Step by step we want to optimize the Chernobyl zone. It should not be a black hole in the middle of Ukraine. Our project is located 100 meters from the reactor, "- said the executive director of Rodina Energy Group Eugene Varyagin.

The publication recalls that the Ukrainian Ministry of the Environment announced in July 2016 of its intention to breathe life into the 30-kilometer zone, which remains almost uninhabited since 1986 after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. Radiation makes the use of the territory for forestry and agriculture unsuitable. Therefore, green energy is seen as something that can be productive in the exclusion zone. In addition, it is connected to the large cities of Ukraine by transmission lines that used to transmit electricity from the Chornobyl NPP.

To attract investors, the government offers cheap land and relatively high entrance fees. Rodina and Enerparc have entered into an agreement under which they will receive 15 euro cents for each kWh until 2030. This price is almost 40% higher than anywhere else in Europe.

"The price is higher because this is a risky market. I think investors are looking for high incomes there, "said Pietro Radoya, an analyst for alternative energy..
