Varicose veins (varicose veins) is a disease in which the wall of the subcutaneous veins loses its elasticity. As a result, the vessels are stretched, on their separate sites, knotty extensions are formed, which gave the name of this disease (varix in Latin means "knot"). The overwhelming majority - up to 95% of patients referring to the phlebologist (phlebologist - a doctor specializing in the treatment of varicose veins and other venous diseases), have the symptoms of varicose veins, not thrombosis or thrombophlebitis, which people are very afraid of.

So, why does modern man show such a keen interest in varicose veins? The explanation is quite simple. Affected varicose veins are mostly women who make special demands on their appearance. And varicose veins, disfiguring the legs (this is not counting discomfort, fatigue and heaviness in the legs), becomes their main enemy. That is why phlebology (the science of diseases of veins) is experiencing in our days a real boom.

It is enough to open any fashion magazine or popular newspaper in order to stumble across several ads that offer a quick and painless way to get rid of varicose veins. To imagine the true price of these tempting promises, one must at least in general terms know what the venous leg system is, how it works, why varicose veins develop and what consequences it can lead to that the methods of treating varicose veins are used in modern phlebology and what is their effectiveness.

Varicosity is a disease, the main cause of which is hereditary constitutional predisposition. On the second place - the hormonal factor. Female sex hormones reduce the tone of the venous wall, making it more thin and expandable. Add to this the increased strain on the feet during pregnancy and childbirth - it becomes clear why varicose veins are more affected by women.

In the development of a pathology such as varicose disease, an important role is played by working conditions: work that involves a long stay, standing on its feet, or a constant sitting position and lack of movement, is also a significant factor in the development of varicose veins.

On the varicose veins of mankind learned at a time when, according to the theory of Darwin, stood on 2 legs. Millions of years of evolution all living things moved on 4 limbs. We freed our hands for work, but our feet, or rather, the leg veins, had to perform at least a double work to deliver blood to the heart. It should be noted that plus to this, in the transition to an upright position, intravenous pressure (at least 2 times). Now it becomes clear why varicose veins are called a disease of "upright".
