Rich in useful unsaturated fat diet does not lead to weight gain, according to an online edition for girls and women from 14 to 35 years old Pannochka. net.

This is evidenced by the results of a study published recently in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.

Good news for people who adhere to the Mediterranean diet.

Many of them are afraid to consume olive oil because of its high caloric value, but as it turned out, it was in vain. Spanish scientists advise to revise the current dietary recommendations, and increase the allowable daily allowance for healthy fats.

"For more than 40 years nutritionists have been defending the so-called low-fat diet, but this did not affect the epidemic of obesity in the Western world. Now we have proved that the Mediterranean diet, containing olive oil and nuts, does not spoil the waist and at the same time is extremely useful for health, "says Dr. Ramon Estruch of the University of Barcelona.

However, scientists warn of the danger of saturated fats, which are part of butter, processed meat, a variety of desserts and fast food.

The latest study covered 7,400 Spanish men and women aged 55 to 80 years who had to follow one of three diets: a Mediterranean diet without restrictions with olive oil, a Mediterranean diet without restrictions with nuts or a low fat diet with strict restriction of any fats.

According to the authors, all participants in their project suffered from type 2 diabetes mellitus, all were at increased risk of cardiovascular events. More than 90% of project participants were either overweight or had clinical obesity.

For 5 years of continuous follow-up, total fat intake dropped from 40 to 37% on a low-fat diet, but increased from 40 to 42% in both groups on the Mediterranean diet. The content of proteins and carbohydrates in the last two groups decreased.

In all three groups, participants were able to achieve weight loss: in olive oil, they dropped an average of 2 pounds (0.88 kg), walnuts - 1.3 pounds (0.60 kg), and on a low-fat diet - an average of 0 , 9 lb (0.40 kg). Modest achievement of the third group was a surprise.

The waist girth did not change significantly in any of the groups: on the olive oil the participants added an average of 1/3 inch (0.85 cm), on walnuts - 1/7 inch (0.37 cm). In this case, for 5 years of strict low-fat diet, participants not only did not remove the stomach, but also distributed in breadth on average to? inches (1.2 cm)!.

"Current dietary guidelines are based on obsolete and controversial information about fat. They need to be revised to increase the amount of healthy fats contained in vegetable oils, yoghurt and, probably, even in cheese, "- calls on independent expert, professor of epidemiology Dariush Mozaffarian (Dariush Mozaffarian).
