The French authorities approved a referendum on the independence of New Caledonia

It is noteworthy that the exact date of the plebiscite has not yet been determined, but it should be held no later than November 2018.

The conduct of a popular consultation on independence was envisaged in the agreement signed in 1998 on the sequential decolonization of the archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, which has the status of the overseas territory of France.

New Caledonia - a special administrative-territorial entity of France, located on the island of the same name in the south-western part of the Pacific Ocean. Its population is 245 thousand people, mostly Melanesians and French, the capital is the city of Noumea.

As previously reported in URA-Inform, the Catalanian Ministry of Education has just proclaimed independence from Spain. After the secret ballot, the Catalan parliamentarians proclaimed their new status - complete independence from the central administration of Madrid. True, representatives of opposition parties did not participate in the voting.
