The citizen of Montenegro, the translator of the opposition bloc Democratic Front, Anania Nikich, was granted asylum in Russia, the Pobjeda newspaper was told in the Montenegrin Ministry of Justice. Nikich's homeland is accused of attempting a coup d'etat in October 2016.

A letter from the Russian Prosecutor General's Office with a notice of Nikitsch asylum was sent to Montenegro on October 9. The newspaper writes that after several months in prison, Nikich was released.

Nikich was put on the wanted list after the failed coup attempt last October. According to the investigation, he "on the instructions of the creators of the criminal organization was engaged in recruiting members of the organization for the preparation and commission of crimes," and also organized secret meetings. For more than two decades, Nikich has recruited citizens of Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia for Russian intelligence, Montenegrin investigators.

After the investigation began, Nikich left Montenegro, and in April there were reports of his detention in Russia through the Interpol line.

On June 10, a court in Montenegro approved an indictment on the case of a failed state coup. The indictment presented to the court mentions Russians Eduard Shishmakov (used a passport for the name Shirokov) and Vladimir Popov, who are considered to be the organizers of the attempted coup.
