Equifax reported that, due to resignation, Smith irrevocably loses the right to receive a cash bonus for 2017. This amount was to be more than $ 3 million.

Nevertheless, the general director reserved the right to immediately receive an amount of $ 72 million, which includes nine of his salaries, as well as another $ 17.9 million over the next several years. The advantage of Smith's voluntary resignation is that he will continue to receive payments for shares, as if he still works for the company, according to Equifax. However, this bonus can still be taken away from him.

The company said in its announcement that it reserves the right to amend the "description of Mr. Smith's departure" after the completion of an independent investigation into the leakage of data from the users of the bureau. If it is proven that Smith is guilty of hacking, Equifax will be able to change the reason for leaving to "dismissal".

Smith held a position since 2005 and during this time managed to accumulate in his retirement benefit about $ 18.5 million, which he will in any case receive.
