Equifax CEO Richard Smith left the large US credit bureau following a massive hacking of his database, jeopardizing the data of 143 million people. He was already the third top manager of the company, who left the company in connection with the incident.

Equifax reported that, due to resignation, Smith irrevocably loses the right to receive a cash bonus for 2017. This amount was to be more than $ 3 million.

Nevertheless, the general director reserved the right to immediately receive an amount of $ 72 million, which includes nine of his salaries, as well as another $ 17.9 million over the next several years. Thus, according to the calculations of Fortune, the total amount for which Smith is entitled is $ 90.1 million.

The advantage of Smith's voluntary resignation is that he will continue to receive payments for shares, as if he still works for the company, according to Equifax. However, this bonus can still be taken away from him.

The company said in its announcement that it reserves the right to amend the "description of Mr. Smith's departure" after the completion of an independent investigation into the leakage of data from the users of the bureau. If it is proven that Smith is guilty of hacking, Equifax will be able to change the reason for leaving to "dismissal".

However, even in this case already the former general director of the enterprise will not remain without money. Smith held a position since 2005 and during this time managed to accumulate in his retirement benefit about $ 18.5 million, which he will in any case receive. In addition, he owns shares Equifax worth about $ 23.6 million, which now can easily sell. Moreover, earlier this year Smith had already sold shares worth about $ 19 million. Add here his proportional salary, exceeding $ 1 million, and get almost $ 62 million.

But Smith can lose money even if his fault is not recognized in the leak. This will happen in the event that the value of Equifax shares, after the appearance of information about the hacking fell by 25%, will not grow again.
