MediaTek may lag behind competitors in the race for advanced semiconductor technologies, industry sources warn, whose opinion results from DigiTimes.

Earlier, the co-director of the company Rick Tsai (Rick Tsai) announced that MediaTek will finish development of 7-nm chips and will transfer it to production in the second half of 2018. However, the interlocutors of the publication believe that next year the vendor is unlikely to release products manufactured at 10-nm or 7-nm standards, since the chip maker focused on the segment of smartphones of the average price level.

According to sources, R & D-MediaTek resources are concentrated around the family of Helio P chips intended for medium-sized devices, and the development of high-end Helio X processors is suspended.

There are fears that MediaTek's lag in the area of ??advanced solutions may be a harbinger of the slowdown in the growth of the Taiwan chip development industry as a whole.

According to the research company IC Insights, in 2016 MediaTek entered the top ten chipmakers with revenues of $ 8.8 billion. However, in the first quarter of 2017, MediaTek dropped out of the rating, losing to Germany's semiconductor producer Infineon.

Chipmeyker expects to begin to win back lost market positions from the fourth quarter of 2017, and in 2018 hopes to accelerate growth rates.
