A new method of treating permanent pain was developed by neurosurgeons. If further tests of this method prove to be positive, then people suffering from constant severe pain will have a chance to help.

According to the British Guardin, Dr. Tipu Aziz, is testing his method on 40 patients who were not helped by traditional methods of fighting pain.

The research in this direction, Professor Aziz began in the 1990's. He believes that in about 80% of cases, patients can be helped.

The method is based on, so-called, deep brain stimulation. To perform this operation, two small holes are made in the skull of the patient, through which electrodes are implanted into the brain, to which, in turn, electrical impulses of low voltage. The procedure of the operation requires that the patient is not in a state of general anesthesia, and the entire procedure is performed under local anesthesia. This is done so that, according to the patient's senses, it is possible to accurately determine the necessary place for the introduction of electrodes. The power source is also implanted to the patient, either near the clavicle, or into the abdominal cavity.

While the operation is quite expensive - $ 49,000. Despite the skepticism of many specialists with regard to this technique, Professor Aziz himself is confident in its effectiveness and believes that with a larger spread of the new method, the price for it will drop substantially.

And while while for sure no one can say about the mechanisms of the anesthetic effect of the method of "deep brain stimulation", the majority of patients who underwent the treatment according to this method note a significant improvement in the health of medicus. en.
