Stones from the Sverdlovsk region decorate the "Wall of Sorrow" in Moscow

Stones from different parts of the country will be used to build the square in front of the memorial to the victims of political repression "The Wall of Sorrow," which was erected at the intersection of Academician Sakharov Avenue and the Garden Ring in Moscow. The municipalities of the Sverdlovsk region can contribute to the creation of the memorial.

The opening of the monument, authored by famous sculptor Georgy Frangulyan, is scheduled for October 30, on the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repressions. "Wall of Sorrow" - two-sided high relief with several arches. It consists of a multitude of faceless bronze human figures that merge into one. Several arches-human silhouettes symbolize those who survived repression. On both sides of the relief there are bronze tablets with the text on which the word "Remember" is engraved in different languages.

The square in front of the monument will be laid with stones brought from different parts of the country, connected with the period of political repression. The municipalities of the Sverdlovsk region intend to join the project. Thus, the possibility of participating in the creation of the monument is considered in the administration of Kushva. In the 1930s, near the town, a settlement was set up for special resettlers. Those who died of hunger and epidemics were buried on the slope of Mount Goloy, where a memorial is now erected.

In the Sverdlovsk region in 1937-1938, according to archival scientists, nearly 20 thousand people became victims of repression. And all in the period from 1918 to 1953, over 64.1 thousand citizens were brought to responsibility for "political" articles in the region. Sentenced to various terms of correctional labor in the camp, unable to withstand excessive labor, perished.
